World Breastfeeding Week is October 1-7. Local Restaurants Encouraged to Welcome Breastfeeding Moms

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Friday, September 30, 2016

Perth County  ̶  World Breastfeeding Week takes place October 1-7. Locally, the Health Unit is encouraging restaurants to become breastfeeding friendly establishments.

“Our breastfeeding data shows that most women in Perth County choose to breastfeed their babies,” says Public Health Nurse, Glenda Blair. “We are inviting local businesses to become part of a community that creates an environment that supports breastfeeding.”

The Health Unit is focusing on the message “Breastfeed: Anytime, Anywhere,” and has sent out packages to local restaurants and food premises that contain:

  • A decal for the front window or door to show they welcome breastfeeding moms
  • A how-to guide called “Make Breastfeeding your Business”
  • A poster for staff on how to make women feel comfortable breastfeeding in the restaurant
  • Ontario Human Rights brochure on pregnancy and breastfeeding

“Every woman in Ontario has the right to breastfeed anytime and anywhere without being asked to stop, move or cover up,” explains Blair. “Making breastfeeding moms feel welcome is good for business and important to the health of our babies.”
