Perth County – World Water Day is celebrated on March 22 every year. Globally, water is important for human and environmental health, sustainable development, industry, generating energy, and growing and producing food. Locally, the Perth District Health Unit wants to remind residents that they need to test their well water regularly.
“With spring around the corner, now is an important time to test your well drinking water,” says Jennette Kidnie, Public Health Inspector. Bacteria can contaminate well water and affect the health of everyone who drinks it. “People may think their well water is fine, but the quality can change frequently,” says Kidnie. Testing well water at least three times per year (preferably in spring, summer and fall) is the best way to make sure the water is safe.
Private well owners in Perth County can have their well water tested for bacteria free of charge. Water testing kits are available at the locations listed below and at local municipal offices. Take the sample just before you drop it off at one of the following locations:
- Perth District Health Unit, 653 West Gore Street, Stratford; Monday to Thursday, 8:30am – 4:30pm, and Friday, 8:30am – 11:30am.
- Knollcrest Lodge (front desk), 50 William Street, Milverton; Monday to Thursday, 8:30am – 4:30pm.
- Listowel Memorial Hospital (outpatient lab), 255 Elizabeth Street East, Listowel; Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm.
Well owners who wish to have their water supply tested for chemicals, such as nitrates and sulphur, can do so through a licensed private laboratory for a fee.
Perth County residents are encouraged to call the Health Unit if they have questions about their drinking water or have a poor result after testing their well water. The Health Unit can provide information about properly maintaining your well, how to reduce risks of contamination, and treatment options.
