Influenza Activity in Perth County
Tuesday, January 30th, 2018
Perth County – Influenza is still present in Perth County, although there are signs it may be waning. As of January 29th, 2018, there have been 25 cases of influenza A and 20 cases of influenza B in Perth County confirmed through laboratory testing. Many people who are sick do not see a doctor or get tested, therefore the lab-confirmed cases only represent a small proportion of people who have the flu.
“In the last couple of weeks, the number of new lab-confirmed cases of influenza being reported to us has slowed down,” says Lorna Askes, Public Health Nurse. “But it’s still important to remind people that influenza is a serious illness – much worse than the average cold.” Every year, about 2,000 people die in Canada from influenza or its complications.
The flu shot is the best protection against the flu and is still available through family doctors (for all ages) and select pharmacies (for people aged five and over).
The Health Unit is also urging people who are sick to stay home. “Staying home will help stop the spread of the flu to people who may be more susceptible to complications,” says Askes. Ill people are especially urged to avoid visiting long-term care homes or hospitals until they are well again.
To help stay healthy, the Health Unit advises all residents to take these simple precautions:
- Get a flu shot
- Wash your hands thoroughly and often
- Cough or sneeze into your sleeve
- Keep surfaces and items disinfected
- Stay home if you are sick.
