Food safety courses are offered every spring and fall.
After attending the course and passing the test, you will get Food Handler Training Certification that is valid for 5 years.
In Perth County food handler certification is not a requirement of the Health Unit, however, we promote that managers have food handler training and that each food premises has at least one trained person present during food preparation.
Topics covered in the course include:
- Role of the Board of Health
- Public Health laws
- food safety management principles including HACCP
- Safe handling, preparation and storage of food
- food handler hygiene
- food premises sanitation, design and maintenance
- prevention of food allergies
- response to emergency situations (fire, flood, blackout).
The 6 hour course is followed by a test with a passing mark of 70%.

Location: Mitchell Arena, 185 Wellington St. N., Mitchell (in the meeting room off the main entrance)

A 3rd course may be offered only if 15 people sign up. This course is not guaranteed to run.

Online Food Safety Courses
This section is for information about an online course that is available all the time.
- In Good Hands is a 12-hour online food safety course.
- Study online at your convenience and at your own pace, then complete the test at the Health Unit.
- Course fee and exam is $40.51.

Recertification
If you have earned a Food Handler Certificate in the past 10 years, you may be eligible to write a recertification test without taking a food safety course. The cost is $10.
